When I got home from Coffey Park my mom tells me that Mr. Nick from the sandwich shop downstairs was looking for me. He asked my mom if it would be okay for me to work in his store on Saturday and Sunday. Wow, me work for Mr. Nick? That’s a first. Mr. Nick is always very nice to the kids in the neighborhood. I said to my mom do you know what kind of work he wants me to do? She had no idea, but she said that she told him that it would be a good experience for me to have a little job.
I was so excited because I never had a real job, except when I work with Mr. Pauli delivering fruits and vegetables for tips. I ran downstairs as fast as I could. I walk into the store and Mr. Nick calls me over to talk to him. He says, “Hello Pepino, did your mom talk to you about working in the store starting tomorrow afternoon?” “Yes Sir Mr. Nick, what do you want me to do? I never had a real job before and I hope I can do a good job for you”. He stated to laugh and said “Pepino don’t worry I’ll teach to all you have to know. Your mom does not want you to work with knives or the slicing machines.
I assured her that you will not work with anything that can hurt you. I have sandwich orders for two big weddings this weekend and my son Danny is sick so I need you to help me assemble about 500 sandwiches for these weddings. You think you can do that?” “Yes Sir Mr. Nick. What time do you want me to start work?” “Come here about twelve o’clock, I’ll make you a sandwich before you start work.” I had this big smile on my face when I thanked Mr. Nick and ran out of the store hoping I would see some of my friends so I could tell them about my job and the sandwich too. I just can’t believe it myself. My Friends will just Freak out. None of my friends were around so I went home, had dinner, listen to my radio programs and went to bed.
I had another sleepless night thinking about my new job and wondering what kind of sandwich Mr. Nick plans to make for me. So I was up early and had five hours to kill before I report for work. I couldn’t wait for my friends to show up so I went to Jimmy Pizza’s house and started yelling in his hallway for him to come down. Jimmy called down to me “what are you crazy it’s seven o’clock in the morning and my parents are going to kill you.” “Please tell your parents that I’m sorry to wake them up so early, but I have some important news to tell you.” After about fifteen minutes go by I can hear Jimmy running down the stairs.
When he got down I could see that he put on his clothes in a hurry and he didn’t comb his hair. “Okay, now that my family is going to kill me what’s so important?” I said, “You’re not going to believe it. I got a real job.” I gave him the whole story about Mr. Nick talking to my mother and my meeting with him and I also told him about the sandwich. Jimmy had his mouth open the whole time and when I finished he said. “Holy Shit; that’s unbelievable. When to you start your new job?” “I’ve got about four more hours to wait before I go to the store for lunch.” I couldn’t help myself just to rub it in a little.
His mouth was still open then he said, “Well I planned to call you this morning anyway because my sister gave me a sack of new marbles for my birthday yesterday and I was going to ask you if you wanted to set up a game this morning?” My head was still spinning about my job and when I came down to earth I said to Jimmy. “Yeah that sounds like a good idea it will keep me busy while I wait for the twelve o’clock hour to report for work. Let’s get a hold of Nunzio and Pecker to see if they want to play marbles with us?” Before we went to call Nunzio and Pecker I stopped by my apartment to get my box of marbles. We got Pecker and Nunzio to come out and they were very happy to set up a game of marbles with us. I also gave them the complete story about my new job at Defonte’s Sandwich Shop. But time was running out for me, I had three hours left to play marbles with them.
We had to decide which game of marbles to play because there is so many to choose from. We can play Poison, Potsie, Googel, Dropsies, Fox Hole, Puggy or about five other games I can think of. Today we settled on our favorite game “Potsie”. We went over to a vacant lot across the street from the sandwich shop so we can play on a patch of dirt. First we had to chase away four kids about five years old who were hunting for bugs in the lot. That was not a big problem for us. We just told them to move they’re ass out of there and find another place to go bug hunting.
After they left we started to clear an eight foot by eight foot area that will be free of grass, weeds and any garbage that happened to be laying there. I found a stick and made a two foot circle in the middle of the square, and then I scratched a starting line about six feet from the circle. Okay the field is now ready for action. We each put five of our marbles in the circle and spread them apart. Once everything was in place we started to choose which player goes first, second, third and forth. Jimmy won, and he will go first. He stands behind the line in the dirt and throws or tosses his shooter marble at the circle. He has to be very careful not to put his shooter marble into the circle. If it goes into the circle he has to go to the back of the line. This round we all toss our shooters at the circle and no one lands in the circle. The next round is to shoot your marble at the marbles in the circle in order to knock out 0f the circle as many marbles as possible.
The fact that Jimmy won the first toss does not mean that he will shoot first at the marbles in the pot. The new rotation is set up by the players toss. The player who is the closest to the circle goes first. I was the closest one and I shoot as hard as I can and I manage to knock out three marbles which are now mine. I keep shooting until I miss or get stuck in the circle. If I miss the next player goes. If I get stuck in the circle I have to put two marbles back into the pot and start over from the line. This game can go on and on for hours, until all the marbles are knocked out of the circle, that’s when the game is over. But my time was running out I could not play until all the marbles are knocked out of the circle. So I call it quits, picked up my marbles and walked across the street to report for work.
