Even though it was three days ago I am still glowing from my trip to Ebbets Field with Roger. I can’t believe that I got to see the Dodgers and Jackie Robinson live and in person. Roger is a pain in the ass most of the time when he is out to screw me out of the few dollars I saved. But I will always be greateful to him for inviting me to go with him to see my first major league baseball game. I went to school today and Miss Kent is so easy to listen to. When she gives us a social study lesson it’s like hearing a great story and I’m learning a lot about American History. I just like to look at her, my teacher is so beautiful. Before you know it the bell rang, its three o’clock, time to go home. I dropped off my books at home and I went out looking to find my friends. No one seems to be outside they’re probably doing homework. I was just about to give up and go home when I see Joanie sitting on her stoop. I call out to her “Hey Joanie, what are you doing?” She answered,
“Not much, I waiting for Jenny to come over, she’s got a new board game she wants to play with me. Did you finish your homework?” “No, I plan to do it tonight. I’ll just sit with you to wait for Jenny. I would like to see the new board game she’s bringing over.”
So we sat together for about fifteen minutes when we see Jenny walking up the block with another girl. When she got close to us she said, “Hi Pepino, this is my girlfriend Frances. Would you like to play this Mexican jumping bean board game with us?” I’m thinking to myself, damn straight I want play with you. Her girlfriend, Frances is a beauty. Frances is a little on the short side, she looks great in her tight blue jeans. She has a cute face that glows when she smiled at me. I love the way her dark brown hair pulled back into a ponytail. I think that she reminds me of a young Miss Kent. Jenny laid out the board game on the stoop and gave each of us a bean. The she says “Okay, we all have to put our Mexican bean in the center of the circle at the same time. We have to hold our bean upright with our finger. When I say go, we take our fingers off the bean and watch the bean wiggle all over the place. The first bean to wiggle out of the circle gets the points closest to the bean.
We keep doing the same thing until a bean reaches a total of twenty points for a win. It’s a crazy game because none of us has any control over our Mexican bean. Sometimes they move fast, some time they move slow and sometimes they don’t move at all.” Jenny is right, it’s a crazy game. When we released our beans, each one of us started yelling and screaming for our bean to move, as if the bean could hear us. Frances started laughing out of control. I loved it. The only bean that seemed to hear and jump towards the line is Joanie’s bean. It looked like it moved and stopped to Joanie’s command. It was like an invisible hand or ghost was moving the bean for her. Joanie won all three games with her magic bean.
We all went home for dinner and I am hoping that I get to see Frances again. I got up stairs and my Mom didn’t look happy at all. She told me to wash up and sit at the table. I get it. My dad is still out of work and my Mom has to put something on the dinner table for us to eat. She didn’t say much when she put a bunch of fried chicken feet and a pot of chicken bean soup on the table. The soup is made from chicken guts that my Mom’s friend at the live market, gave her.
We have no bread, no butter, no wine, just water to wash everything down with. But I must say that even though my Mom got this so called food from the garbage can at the chicken market it is tasty and not that bad to eat. My Mom must have been cleaning the chicken feet and chicken guts all day long for it to taste this good. I like the fried chicken feet, except when my Mom misses cutting the nail off the foot. When I eat the soup, I try to pick out the chicken livers, I don’t like to eat the hart, because it’s like having a piece of gum in your mouth, it’s too chewy. After dinner my Dad told us that he thinks that a large ship is about to arrive in the next several days and his contractor told him that he may have a ship scalar job for him. I hate to see my father work like a dog in the fuel tanks of these huge ships. But I know that he looks so happy when he’s working and brings home his paycheck to support our family. When he comes home after work, he’s covered with all this black stuff. It takes my Mom about an hour to clean him up. He then sits for dinner; he eats and goes right to sleep. My Dad gets up at six in the morning, has a cup of coffee and goes back to do this dirty job all over again. I wish I could help him somehow.
After eating my fried chicken feet, I park myself by the radio to listen to the adventures of Sherlock Holmes. My sister told me about this radio program and now I try not to miss a broadcast.
All the characters are fun to listen to. Sherlock has a super brain and he is able to solve crimes based on deduction, whatever in the hell that means. The other programs I list to like Superman, Batman, Spiderman and most other super hero’s need to beat the bad guys with their strength not so much their brains. That’s why I like Sherlock Holmes, he remind me a little of Roger, He’s always thinking about stuff. Roger couldn’t fight his way out of a paper bag. I like Sherlock’s side kick Dr. Watson too. He has a gun and he’s not afraid to use it when it comes down to protecting Sherlock from the bad guys. When I listen to the story on the radio and Sherlock goes into his deduction crap and he finds the answer to the crime, I don’t know why, I really get excited. Then the Scotland Yard Inspector Lastrade, gets all the credit for solving the crime. I still can’t figure out the bad guy called Moriarty, who is as smart if not smarter than Sherlock Holmes at times. Sherlock Holmes stories on the radio keep me glued to my seat. After the radio programs are over, I sat down to do my homework, I open my Social Study school book and in ten minutes I fall asleep with the book in my hand.
